About Greenland

The largest island in the world

Greenland is the largest Island of the world. Approximately 3/4th is covered by an ice sheet. The Ice Sheet is the world’s largest area covered by ice outside of Antarctica.

The country is part of the commonwealth of Nations with Denmark and the Faroe Islands.

Greenland got Home Rule Government in 1979, which were expanded to Self-government in 2009.

Greenland has a parliament and a government that control most domestic policy areas. Denmark is stil responsible for several areas, but Greenland has the opportunity to take over this responsibility except for foreign and defense policy.

Only a little more than 56.000 citizens is living in Greenland in cities and settlements. Greenlanders have a rich tradition of telling stories, a long handcraft tradition and since the first wave of immigration via Thule around 4-5000 years ago, Greenlanders have been dependent on nature’s resources in the form of fish, birds, land mammals and marine mammals making Greenlanders quite capable of living off the land and have a respect for nature. 

Transportation between populated places take place by ship or plane.

With its almost 20.000 inhabitants Nuuk is the capital of Greenland.

Most important income

The biggest income for Greenland comes from fishing and a block grant from Denmark.

Growing business life

Tourism and the mining industry  is also developing rapidly and is expected to be significant for the economy of Greenland.
